Also Elle/Emmett, but O
O. The stars or space.
In their first year of dating, Emmett felt committed to showing Elle all the must-see Boston attractions. Places that had been field trip hot spots when he was a child, now were reasons to walk around holding hands for an afternoon, such as the New England Aquarium, the Museum of Fine Arts, and the Museum of Science with its planetarium. And if they missed part of the planetarium show because they were making out like teenagers in the back row, then that was just an excuse to come back.
The planetarium became a fast favorite. They both found they really enjoyed sitting in a cool, dark room, watching a short film on space play all around them. They went back fairly often, and when Emmett went with Elle to visit her family in Malibu, she took him to Griffith Observatory in LA to watch the planetarium show there.
After the show, they walked hand in hand back out into the sunshine, Elle said, “It’s too bad we can’t really see the stars back home. It’s one of the things I miss about living out here.”
Emmett smiled. “Guess we’ll have to make it a point to take a weekend trip to see some stars when we get back, huh?” he said.
“Guess we will!”
Getting back to Boston meant getting right back to work, and thoughts of weekend trips to the country to see stars were quickly forgotten about. Elle was in her second year of law school, and Emmett was working harder than ever at his new job in a law firm downtown.
Then one morning, Emmett overheard someone in front of him at a coffee shop talking about a meteor shower. “My kid loves space, so I bought him a telescope for Christmas, but I’m not sure if I’ll be able to take him out of town to see the shower this weekend,” the man said. “Maybe my wife can take him.”
Suddenly, Emmett had a plan. When he got to work, he did some research about the meteor shower, and the best spots for viewing. He booked a room in a bed & breakfast a couple hours out of Boston, and made an extensive packing list. He couldn’t wait to surprise Elle with this.
The week crawled by, until finally it was Friday afternoon. Emmett left work early, went home to pack the car, and then texted Elle that he was picking her up at school as soon as her class was over.
“What’s going on?” Elle asked suspiciously as she got into the car.
“Remember when we talked about getting out of town to look at some stars a while ago?”
“Oh my gosh! Emmett! Is that what we’re doing?”
“Even better. There’s a meteor shower this weekend, and I booked us a room in a small town where we’ll be able to watch it,” he answered proudly. It wasn’t easy to surprise Elle Woods, but Emmet knew he’d pulled off a good one.
They arrived at their hotel that evening, had dinner, and relaxed in their room before setting out much later. Emmett had gotten directions to a good, remote spot on a hill to watch the show, and was deeply excited about all of this. Armed with blankets, snacks, a thermos of hot chocolate, and a telescope he’d borrowed from a coworker, they arrived at their destination late that night.
The meteors streaked across the sky every few minutes, leaving both of them breathless each time. They spread out on a blanket and listened to the sounds of the field around them, a little overwhelmed by the stars that covered every bit of the sky. The sky was clear and the air was cold, and Elle laid her head on Emmett’s shoulder while they watched the sky.
“This is the most romantic thing anyone’s ever done for me, Emmett. Thank you,” she said softly.
“It’s the most romantic thing I’ve ever done. I’m glad you’re happy,” he said, before pressing a kiss to the top of her head.
Elle propped herself up on her elbow and leaned over to kiss him properly. “I’m so happy. I love you,” she whispered after pulling back.
“I love you too,” he said.
She curled back against him, angling herself so that she still had a good view of the sky while being wrapped in his arms. Emmett held her tightly, and let the night envelop them both. The stars were bright and mystical, and he had Elle Woods curled up in his arms. Emmett had never been happier.
(send me a character and a letter for a fic!)
I was gonna send you the same exact thing and I still will, JerJor!
THAT THING. THAT HE DOES WHEN HE’S PLAYING JACK KELLY. AND HE’S SINGING SANTA FE. WHERE HE SOUNDS LIKE HE’S ON THE VERGE OF TEARS BUT ALSO HITTING THESE BIG BIG NOTES AND HIS VOICE IS SO CLEAR AND POWERFUL AND THEN HE DRAGS THE HAT DOWN THE SIDE OF HIS FACE AND I PASS OUT FROM SHEER EMOTION.
A few notes from Newsies at the Muny (that I can remember, because mostly I was just grinning with unrestrained glee):
Jay Armstrong Johnson’s Jack was pretty damn great. I TRIED VERY HARD NOT TO FAULT HIM FOR NOT BEING JEREMY JORDAN and mostly succeeded. His Sante Fe was appropriately desperate and sad (he didn’t do the hat grab at the end, which was sad, but he didn’t do the fist pump either, which, thank you) and there was one moment (I’M SORRY I CAN’T REMEMBER EXACTLY WHAT IT WAS) where he went up on a note that I’ve heard literally every other Jack go down on, and it rocked my world.
Daniel Quadrino’s Crutchie was literally my favorite Crutchie I’ve ever seen. His voice was SPECTACULAR and I loved the way he did Letter from the Reuge and he was just...the best.
SPENCER DAVID MILFORD IS A HOMETOWN BOY AND HE DID SUCH A GOOD JOB WITH DAVEY. For their bows, he ran out with Les on his back and it was the cutest thing ever.
Tessa Grady played Katherine with a level of manic energy that I haven’t seen another Katherine played with, but which makes sense because of her desperation to break out as a journalist, and I liked it. Also she killed Watch What Happens.
They cut down and simplified the dance breaks in Carrying the Banner, Seize the Day, and King of New York quite a bit, which is disappointing but totally understandable. The dancers did an amazing job with it. I just...you know, I just miss dudes ripping newspapers with their feet.
BROOKLYN’S HERE THOUGH. SPOT CONLON AND CO. CAME DIRECTLY OUT OF THE AUDIENCE AND IT WAS AMAZING.
Once and For All was also amazing because there was a bunch of little kids on stage that they revealed with this awesome lighting moment and the newsies handed the banners directly to the kids and it was v. touching.
KATHERINE AND JACK MADE OUT A LOT. Jack literally picked Katherine up during their finale kiss.
JACK ALSO DANCED. WE GOT A DANCING JACK.
The harmonies were like, so big and echoy outdoors. So good.
If you’ve never seen the Muny stage, it is absolutely behemoth. And like, I’d say half the shows per season can’t figure out how to use the stage properly, because they’re used to much smaller theaters. But Newsies used it probably the best I’ve ever seen. They took advantage of a turntable and a LED screen and giant walls that recede in and out of the side and a scaled down version of the big three-tiered towers that nevertheless got the job done and weaved them all in and out through scene changes in a way that I didn’t expect but totally worked.
Everyone then sang Auld Lang Syne because it was the last show of the Muny season and I cried.

SAME. FIRST TIME IS AWE. SECOND TIME IS CRYING.
YES EXACTLY THIS. THE FIRST TIME IS JUST PURE, UNBRIDLED JOY. THE SECOND TIME IS EVERY EMOTION.
amaliabalash replied to your post “Is there really anything worse than a canker sore?”
There is an episode of Fringe that informs me there actually are repercussions but that is fiction so I could be wrong.
That sounds fake but okay.
(I am really, really terrified of what that episode might be about...)
