Amanda Buck Visits FBU!
Amanda Buck has done some pretty amazing work since she graduated from Ohio State in 2008. She has been a part of PieLab & Project M and done a plethora of freelance work around the design circuit. She even made GOOD magazine's list of "25 Female Designers and Illustrators We Love" in 2011. While we love her for her design aesthetic and keen eye for details, we also admire her for keeping such a positive attitude and humble demeanor. She's currently a designer for the Obama 2012 re-election campaign and we're loving the graphics she has been posting on her blog!
A few months ago, she met with us at the Firebelly U headquarters to chat about her career and her experience with Pie Lab. For those of you who aren't familiar with Pie Lab, it is described as having "the mission of: 'Pie + Ideas = Conversation. Conversation + Design = Social Change.'" It is really such a lovely idea because everyone loves pie. I mean, really, EVERYONE. We had a candid discussion with her about her experience with design in the social sector and the reality that it can be very different from your standard for-profit. You really have to consider the people and communities you are working with, and not make rash assumptions.
This is something we consider a lot at Firebelly U, since most of our clients are non-profits and we know our work can not come off as inauthentic or hyper-marketed– that could be potentially devastating to a project. It has been really interesting to see how Amanda has centered her design work largely around infographics lately. I believe this is a result of social design needing to be transparent and clear. If you try and manipulate the content your audience (the public) won't be swayed and may even see a reason not to trust your organization. All in all it was great to hear someone else's perspective on the challenge of designing in the social sphere. And she makes it look so easy! Check out her work and blog here!

Buildings of Greensboro
So there was this one time when I lived in Rural Alabama [specifically Greensboro]. I met this lady, Ann Bailey, who saw the world through rose colored glasses at an age where such lenses are unheard of. We [Amanda Buck, Julie Roche, Ann & I] got together and decided to make a book about the history of the buildings on Greensboro's Main Street. Ann wrote it and the rest of us designed it. Here it is for sale on the interwebs. A cheaper B & W version will be sold in Greensboro, as well.
Congratulations to our Amanda Buck!
She has been selected as one of GOOD's Designing Women: 25 Female Designers and Illustrators We Love. YEA Amanda - we are all so proud of you!
