re: poe’s mutiny and being stunned/tased by leia
i can see why poe would lead the mutiny, because it was obvious that holdo shared nothing with him nor the crew. he asked her very kindly what was the plan, and she flat out refused to share anything with him based on her deduction of his earlier behaviour. but is he the only one she refused to share the plan with? he is not. it seems the real plan was kept hidden from all but the higher-ups, and up till the plan was revealed, holdo’s idea appeared to be to load the entire resistance onto transports that had no shield defenses or attack capabilities while the main ship was running out of fuel. i get that the resistance is a military organization with certain hierachies but the fact such a crucial plan which involved the LIVES of so many members were not shared is dodgy and not a hallmark of a good leader.
if it were shared, do you think that the rest of the crew would’ve come over to poe’s side so easily when he convinced them of the mutiny? clearly, they found something that resonated in him and not with holdo and found more cause to follow him than with her. in tfa we saw everyone gathered around the mission center to discuss a plan, and this sudden isolation from higher-ups and those lower-ranked is odd to say the least. is the lesson here supposed to be ‘trust your higher ups’ ‘they’ll always have a plan’? because if so then the resistance shouldn’t have existed in the first place and everyone would’ve believed the new republic that the first order was not a threat.
now, this is not to say i’m here to hate holdo as much as i hate what ryan is trying to force feed down our throats about what holdo is, she’s written the typical white feminist (eccentric) woman for us to hate and critique against for making bad leadership decisions. it’s a devaluation of what her character could’ve potentially been. it’s non-feminist.
even when poe called her out on it, did they share the plan with them then? still no, still refusing to tell the resistance what they were doing whatsoever. that’s not the mark of a good leadership. poe warned her that she was risking the lives of everyone on board if she sent of the transports like that, and look how it turned out in the end. imagine if she had shared her plan with poe earlier, without poe having to take necessary precautions against it (sending finn and rose on their mission, for instance), imagine they could’ve WORKED TOGETHER to resolve the issue and reduced the loss of life? but no, the lesson to be learned her is to ‘always trust your superiors’ which is the anti-thesis of everything in SW.
leia used to always listen to everyone in her briefings, and though she and holdo may have different leadership styles, it can’t be that different when it comes to the lives of people at stake. it bothers me she chose to strike poe when poe was already lowering his blaster. someone made a good point where, if the lives of people are at stake, why are you removing one of your best pilots from the equation? that act of stunning him was wholly unnecessary and also demonstrates that leia wasn’t willing to listen to poe’s point of view despite all material pointing to the fact that she was trying to groom him for leadership. wouldn’t it have been better to broker an understanding between poe and holdo, or even for poe to try and understand what poe was doing?
THEY ONLY TALKED ABOUT CRAIT ON THE TRANSPORTS ????
i’m not here for blind trust, i’m here for questioning poorly thought out decisions made by superiors officers.
what transpired was an ugly representation of female leadership as well as racism in the sense of senseless violence towards a poc character, especially a member of at the latin community as a ‘being to be put down.’
i know i roleplay poe and that’s how i write him to preserve his character but GODDAMN if this fucking film doesn’t make me want to write fics again just to prove he’s more than this.
