We are excited to have Iris Film Collective member AMANDA THOMSON featured in this month’s edition of FILM FRIENDS, presented by Echo Park Film Centre. The series brings together established and emerging filmmakers together online for informal discussions on everything analog cinema.

Season Two’s theme is SIMPLE MACHINES.

The Zoom is on JULY 9th at 10AM PST, and Amanda will be discussing pinhole cinema and contact printing in a Bolex.

Amanda also has some prints for sale in the SOLIDARITY PRINT SALE, a photography fundraiser with proceeds donated to Ukrainian organizations working on the ground in Ukraine including Voices of Children, Come Back Alive, and Vostok SOS. The sale goes live Friday July 8th and runs until July 17th. All prints will be 12X18” open edition, unsigned and sold at $125 CAD to remain inclusive to all.

Halloween or Samhain is the time of year when the veil that separates the living from the dead is said to be at its thinnest. In that spirit, Iris Film Collective member Amanda Thomson  remounts her pinhole film performance Rest In Peace through the window at the Burrard View Fieldhouse, Sunday Oct 31st at 8pm.  Rest In Peace 16mm film with live narration. Each first carries with it the promise of a last.  On October 31, 2021 we wander the unknowable. The body unraveling moments collected over a lifetime. Connections slip apart, some things will always get lost, but that is no longer your concern.

Cineworks recently published a great interview with Iris Film Collective member Amanda Thomson discussing the Bolex camera and its use as a contact printer. Some may recall Amanda had a workshop on this topic planned just as the pandemic hit, which was sadly cancelled.

Iris Film Collective is pleased to announce that four of its members have works screening at this year’s Antimatter Media Arts Festival in Victoria, BC, October 15-25, 2020.

Zoe Kirk Gushowaty’s Melt and Amanda Thomson’s Dream Maze screen as part of the collectively made Water Over Glass (a collaboration with composer Jason Zumpano and filmmakers Kellen Jackson and Jimi Pantalon) playing October 16 in the 8pm programme.

Alex MacKenzie’s Think Before You Think: A Portrait of Rick Raxlen has its world premiere with short animated works by Rick Raxlen himself at 6pm, Saturday October 17.

Nisha Platzer’s Tulips Are My Father’s Favourite Flower is featured in the Thursday October 22 programme at 6pm and her film Vaivén on Friday October 23 in the 6pm screening.

Fingers crossed all filmmakers will be in attendance for their respective shows!
