Misty Yellowjackets is in my character pantheon but not the facade portion because Misty isn’t really wearing a facade in so far as her “true” nature is concerned. She is essentially the Erika Furudo of Yellowjackets: her methods are extreme but her intentions are very clear to the viewer. She was never mystified by the wilderness ( evidenced when she saved Nat during the hunt) and is a detective by nature even in the past. Like my facade girls (Akechi Goro, Catra, Satoko Hojo, and Hatsune/Uika Misumi ) have to have a facade that they actively grapple with in the narrative but Misty doesn’t necessarily grapple with a facade, what she grapples with has more do to with her values as person compared to the other Yellowjackets.

Thinking about how if Satoko is red-green color blind then the only character’s hair color she sees in its actual shade is Rika’s 🥺🥺

The new Meguri chapter making me unhinged in the positive way like I’m not the best at articulating my thoughts on WTC ever but like there’s something raw about this acknowledgment that Satoko is constantly putting on a facade that is meant to give her control over her life. Like Satoshi’s disappearance created this belief in her mind that she was too weak to fend for herself and defend herself from abuse, and that this “burden” drove him away. (When we know that isn’t true) So she resolves to be independent and strong not only so Satoshi won’t worry about her but so that no one else will. Even if it’s a lie that she’s doing fine it’s better to suffer when no one’s watching than for them to see her as weak and pitiful. This aspect of her character is a large reason why she acts how she does in GouSotsuMeguri because this mentality “backfires” in St. Lucia and seemingly confirms a fear Satoko has had about her relationship with Rika: She wouldn’t care about her if she wasn’t pitiful. If she wasn’t abused, her and Rika would’ve never become close, and without that tragedy she wouldn’t have Rika (and this goes for Rika too btw e.i Saikoroshi) so why not just accept the perpetual suffering? And the looping only solidified this belief it didn’t create it.

The scars of abuse run deep and I think that as of now the start of Meguri’s Tatariakashi highlights this well. Starting out with showing how her arc in Minagoroshi, an arc often thought as triumphant and inspiring, can just serve as more evidence to her that in order to matter to those around her now she needs to suffer. This obviously contradicts what she “learned” from Satoshi’s disappearance but that’s why she gives him up. Giving up on Satoshi is giving up on this dream that she can ever be strong enough to overcome her abuse. If she’s going to be weak then, she’s going to be weak by choice. And that choice is going to ensure that she spends eternity with the people she loves most no matter how much it kills her.
