IIRC, the pictures of them sitting next to each other (and also with the members of Fifth Harmony) were taken either before the show started or during commercial breaks. During the actual show, they weren’t sitting together.

Following the 2015 American Music Awards, which aired Nov. 22 on ABC, several of the night's performers and winners score big on the Billboard + Twitter Top Tracks chart, dated Dec. 12 (which covers activity over Nov. 23-29).
Dual winner One Direction leads the pack, as its single "Perfect" rebounds 7-2 after the lads performed the song. The quartet snagged two of the night's most coveted prizes, artist of the year and favorite pop/rock band duo/group. "Perfect," which topped the chart in October, is from the group's album Made in the A.M.,which debuted at No. 2 on the Dec. 5 Billboard 200. The set marks 1D's last album before it plans to take an extended hiatus in early 2016.
