I would like to know more about your pipe painting project and why your teacher hated it so much.
(You said you’d elaborate if someone asked)
Of course! To set the scene, it's autumn of 2010. I have been diagnosed with depression and every teacher in the school was informed to treat me with child gloves (without my consent) and I have extremely little access to the internet and only used school computers for anything online. Everything else is me reading encyclopedias or edutainment pop culture osmosis. Ok good everyone knows now.
Art is a required class in 6th grade and won't be in 7th grade so I try to enjoy what I can. I didn't have an artistic bone in my body (at the time) so it's mostly trudging through and hoping for the best the entire semester. We're randomly assigned art partners for a project, and we're told with this partner we will have to recreate a painting or similar art piece of our choosing.
I turn to my partner (total stranger) and say "let's do the pipe painting!" She doesn't know it, so I explain The Treachery of Images to her and how I saw it in an art book I read at the library. My partner laughs and agrees, since she's not good at painting either. We rush up to the teacher and tell her our plan, expecting her to be impressed I knew such an obscure famous painting (I'm 11)
She immediately scowls and says if I don't know the painting's name I can't possibly like it enough. I tell her it says "this is not a pipe" in French, because it technically isn't A pipe, it's an IMAGE of a pipe. She doesn't care and sends us away in a huff, so I look in an art book in the art room for its name. When we come back with it, she says "it's barely a painting though. it's so easy a child could make it. why can't you do a better painting?" I argue I AM a child, and I think it's a good paining, so she relents and says fine, we can do it.
However, she never actually let it go. As we mix our colours to get the perfect shades, my art teacher loudly compliments girls at our table saying they chose such an INTERESTING painting, which isn't even EASY to replicate. They were painting The Son of Man, which IS an interesting painting, but like. Relax? When we're painting, she keeps saying "I don't think you're painting it big enough" and "your circles are flat" like AGAIN LADY, I'M 11. My art partner is extremely uncomfortable and unsure what's going on and asks if I know the teacher personally enough that she hates me (I don't)
Eventually, we present our painting (a week later I think) to the class at the front where we say the painting's name, the artist, when it was made, what medium, why we like it, etc. As soon as we proudly turn our painting to the class, my teacher immediately calls "well that's a simple painting!" and we just look at her like. Ma'am we haven't even started yet. I firmly state our painting choice WAS approved by the teacher, but she interrupts saying "but it's not a GOOD pick, is it?" One kid who wanted to be my friend SO bad as a kid was like "it looks like the painting!" in attempts to diffuse the situation. It didn't REALLY, but we were able to finish presenting.
I told my therapist about it at our next meeting and she was like "oh ^_^ she probably failed somewhere in her life and she takes it out on people because of a lack of complete control. ^_^ Don't take it personally" so I DIDN'T take it personally, and I didn't let her dislike of my preferences get to me, but what a stupid event to happen. JUST SAY I CAN'T DO THE PAINTING DON'T GET ALL PASSIVE AGGRESSIVE. I AM 11...
