“Maintain your head up, hold your coronary heart open.” People crave connection. We have to speak, and listen to from one another, converse, and work together. How do you try this in the event you’re a filmmaker with no associates, caught at residence? Let’s ask Benjamin…

As Far as Comedy Documentaries Go, “The Amazing Johnathan Documentary” Might Be One of the Most Fascinating Ever
We’re still sitting in disbelief about the mysterious/hysterical/ever-changing ride we were taken on with Ben Berman’s Amazing Johnathan Documentary.
If you follow The Prestige’s explanation of a magic trick being pledge/turn/prestige, Berman’s gonzo doc keeps you riveted with turn after turn after turn after turn, constantly wondering when the prestige, ending the trick might come (also with the pledge, the beginning of the trick, being so far in the past you might have forgotten what it was). The documentary ends up being its own wild magic trick of sorts. It’s definitely one of the most meta documentaries to ever have been made.
Simultaneously, The Amazing Johnathan Documentary is a film that’s about the life of celebrated rebellious comedian/magician The Amazing Johnathan, the nature of making documentary films in 2019, and the personal journey of filmmaker Ben Berman trying to uncover what’s happening during this whole process all while recording it.
Truly, Berman accomplished a breathtaking, groundbreaking doc here that happens to focus on one of the greatest (if not the greatest) comedian magicians of all time (there are plenty of clips reminding of you why The Amazing Johnathan lives up to his name FYI).
There are even some delightful echoes of Orson Welles’ amazing F Is For Fake, though The Amazing Johnathan Documentary ends up showing that truth, no matter how far you have to go to chase it, is indeed stranger (and can be far more interesting) than fiction.
Get a taste of that from the trailer, then go watch The Amazing Johnathan Documentary, now streaming on Hulu.
True/False 2019
Untitled Amazing Johnathan Documentary (2019) starts as a documentary about the magician Amazing Johnathan. Four years after being told he has one year to live, he decides to go back on tour. However this documentary takes several turns and becomes something different altogether. Director Benjamin Berman becomes a character, and the focus shifts to his relationship with his subject.
I don’t want to spoil this documentary because there are several twists and turns. Documentary twists are satisfying because real life is so unpredictable. This film is hilarious and beautiful and 100% my kind of documentary. I watched a lot of films this weekend and this was my favorite. It should be coming to Hulu soon and I highly recommend it.
All of the specials I've seen for Amazing Johnathan have been hilarious. I'm so sad he can't perform anymore.
Considering his normal performance persona, seeing him serious is pretty intense.
The Amazing Johnathan stuns ‘ENTSpeaks’ audience: ‘I have a year to live’
By John Katsilometes for the Las Vegas Sun..
The Amazing Johnathan is the last in line on this night after a series of five speakers at Inspire Theater on Fremont East in downtown Las Vegas. Before him, we have been regaled in tales from such legends as Mary Wilson of The Supremes and comic genius Marty Allen.
At the end, it’s the comic magician of whom his contemporaries say is one of the great stage performers of his era. Comic Louie Anderson said that just before the show as he hung around the VIP suite with the night’s speakers. But The Amazing Johnathan, or A.J., as he is commonly known, is not right on this night. He is weak and has trouble walking over any considerable distance. His wife, performance artist Anastasia Synn, has had to sometimes carry him, actually on her back, when his legs fail.

The Amazing Johnathan to Wed on Saturday..
This was reported by Robin Leach in the Las Vegas Sun.. Thanks Robin!
POST-WEDDING RETIREMENT: Following up on my Wicked Whisper & Racy Rumor report Wednesday, I can now confirm that The Amazing Johnathan will marry performance artistAnastasia Synn on Saturday. Longtime friend and “smashing entertainer” Gallagher became an ordained minister specifically to marry the couple in what they are describing as “one of the most off-the-wall weddings Las Vegas has ever hosted.”
A.J.’s office confirmed my report with official news this morning that the ceremony will take place at “A Special Memory Chapel,” which will be decorated in a circus theme. In addition to the couple’s family and close friends, David Copperfield, Carrot Top, Louie Anderson, Cirque Du Soleil cast members, zombies and wrestlers will join in the fun. The reception is at the Plaza, where entertainment will continue into the night.
Sadly, though, A.J. also confirmed today that, due to health issues, he will retire after 35 years of performing. Over three decades, he set house records at the Nugget, Riviera, Flamingo and Bally’s and became the longest-running comic magician in Las Vegas history. His final four shows will take place at the Magic Castle in L.A. from June 30- July 1 and will be recorded for a future documentary.
