Hi, I’m Brin, and my life revolves around celebrities. Yours does too, whether or not you know it. But I feel it especially, because for as long as I can remember I’ve been a follower of celebrity culture and I’ve done my darndest to know what’s going on at all times. And I’m not gonna lie, that means it has a degree of influence on me. But I am not the only one. Celebrity culture influences us all. So I’m going to try to do my best to make sure it’s a positive influence.
For Penny Marshall, I will keep working as long as I have the ability to work, and I will try my best to adapt to new circumstances that may come my way. For Nancy Wilson I will use my voice to fight and to soothe, always looking toward what I know to be right. For Jael Strauss I’m gonna work my weird, trying my hardest to feel beautiful even when the rest of the world isn’t with me. For Stephen Hillenburg, I’m gonna stay in touch with my inner child, and try not to let everything be so serious. For Gloria Katz I’m gonna try my best to elevate others even when it means I won’t get recognition for it. For Mac Miller I’m gonna keep a beat in my head and the right words in my heart as often as I can, whether that means raising my hand to answer a question or comforting a friend. For Burt Reynolds, I’m gonna try my hardest to make myself know I am and will always be cool even when I don’t feel like it. For Robin Leach, I’m gonna be proud of my kind of journalism, even when others tell me it’s “barely even writing, let alone journalism”. For Aretha Franklin, I’m gonna Respect my Natural state (lol I know it’s a pun but still) and show myself, my body and my mind the respect I deserve. For Tab Hunter I’m going to allow myself to wait and do things in my personal life when I feel comfortable doing them, not letting anyone else tell me who I have to be. For Steve Ditko, I’m gonna try my best to let my art speak for itself. For Anthony Bourdain, I’m gonna find wonder in both the big and the small, wherever I can. For Kate Spade, I’m gonna make anything I wear into fashion just by virtue of me wearing it. For Margot Kidder, I’m going to actively take steps to care for the mental health of myself and others. For Avicii, I’m going to just keep dancing. For Stephen Hawking, I’m not going to let my disability get the better of me, I’m going to keep on doing great things. For Barry Crimmins, I’m gonna keep shouting upwards and do my best to never allow myself or anyone around me to crack down on anyone who has less power in this life than me.
Now, who the fuck knows if I’ll be able to do any of this. But you know what? I’m gonna try. I’m gonna keep throwing these at the wall and hoping they stick. And you should too, if you can.
