just a heads up on my position on a topic that i regularly see pop up about alphys:
ok so my position on the alphys orientation conversation is that i think she is bi, and i think she was intended to be canonically bi. she has a crush on asgore at some point, and she’s in love with undyne, and i think that was intended to indicate her orientation in a way that seems more natural than alphys being like “i’m bi” to a ten year old she’s known for a day. i feel the same way about undyne being a lesbian.
however, if i see references to alphys being a lesbian, i usually just let it go, and if it’s interesting or funny or good or whatever, i’ll post it here because, like...having a crush on an unattainable man and then realizing later that you’re actually a lesbian and you were trying to force that crush is a pretty common lesbian experience, you know? so even though i think she’s canonically bi and that’s important to me (as i am also canonically bi) i think if someone finds her relatable and wants to write or draw her as a lesbian, it’s all good.
it only really bugs me if i get the impression that it comes from a place of biphobia, or from not seeing the love a bi woman has for another woman as a love that’s as real as a lesbian’s love. being seen as a fake and liar is a universal lgbt+ experience and i have personally felt that pain that comes from people saying or implying to you that your feelings aren’t real or aren’t pure enough.
but, overall, fandom is a place for very personal interpretations of canon. or else what good is it? i’m glad alphys resonated with so many women like she did with me, and i definitely understand wanting to give her traits that you have that aren’t 100% canon (or are unprovable) so you can explore them with some detachment and safety from your personal feelings about yourself.
