A beautiful reproduction plan of London, extending from Grosvenor Square in the west to Mile En to the east, decorative title cartouche, (in Latin and German), skillfully engraved vignettes depicting St.Paul’s, St. James’s Square. The Custom House and the Royal Exchange. The City of London is highlighted in colour, as are Westminster and Southwark. Diverse, busy river traffic is well engraved upon The Thames, denoting its prime importance to the city, a fact backed up by a vignette of The Customs House. To the title’s right is a key giving the German translation of English terms used upon the plan. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The name Londīnium is thought to be pre-Roman (and possibly pre-Celtic) in origin, but there is no consensus on what it means. ... A common theory is that it derives from a hypothetical Celtic placename *Londinion which was probably derived from the personal name *Londinos, from the word *lond (“wild”).
