It’s funny how the issue of America/The US comes from two fundamental differences in school teaching: In the US and Canada you’re taught about THE AMERICAS, and how there’s three continents in the region, South, Central and North. Meanwhile in the rest of the region we’re taught about the single AMERICAN CONTINENT, and how North, Central and South are just subdivisions, like Central Asia or Southeast Asia.
The other being that in the US you’re primarily taught that the main name of the country is America, like how it is in Mexico (official name is the United Mexican States), while everyone else is taught your main name is The United States, hence why in Spanish and Portuguese we refer to you as Unitedstatedians (estadounidense).
