Thanks! I need luck. These are both good suggestions. I will try them tomorrow.
amazingwhat replied to your post “DID JEEVES JUST SAY THAT HE WOULD DIVORCE BERTIE IF HE DIDN’T GET RID...”
i mean, he practically divorces over a trombone...
No, but he literally said that moustaches are a most notorious cause for divorces in many parts of the country :)))))))))
I have a random question about the Netherlands. Do you learn English in primary school or is it like a secondary school elective or are you self taught? In the U.S., languages are often taught in high school as an elective (a very poor system btw) or by immigrant parents. Also, I love your blog!!
:))) thank you!
We got like very basic english in the last 1 or 2 years of primary school (around age 11/12) but I don’t think I learned much there.. by that time I was already spending time on neopets and other english websites (not as much as I spend online now, but I had like 2 days a week of computer time) and I played english video games like pokemon and zelda etc. which gave me more exposure and probably taught me more than those english classes.. (also nothing on television is dubbed here except like.. things for very small children, everything else has subtitles, so I was exposed to english on tv too)
in secondary school english is a mandatory subject all the way through-out high school.. you can’t opt out of that one (we also got french and german mandatory the first couple of years, but those you could opt out if you chose a ‘beta’ study program (idk how to translate that but like.. halfway through high school you have to choose if you want to take the more mathematical/physics/chemics/biology/etc. route = beta, or the languages/history/geography/art etc. route = alpha.. I picket alpha.. this is a very simplified explanation it’s much more complicated).. if you chose alpha (in my school at least) you had to keep either french or german too.. I picked french..
but again, the first two years of high school (it’s actually literally translated called ‘middle school’, but I tend to translate it to high school anyway because we don’t make that distinction we just have primary school until you’re 12 and after that you go to high school where you stay either 4 or 5 or 6 years (or in my case 8 years if you repeat two years of the original 6) depending on which ‘difficulty level’ high school you end up doing..) I had a very distractable, but friendly, english teacher who didn’t really taught me much at all, but in the later years I did learn some more vocabulary etc. in high school and I got a cambridge certificate in advanced english (which was an optional extra thing outside of school) when I was in my 5th year..
english was one of my favourite subjects in high school and I got like a 9/10 for english on my graduating diploma, but I really think I learned AT LEAST as much from exposure on television/games/internet from an early age as I did at school..
