Amazon to Close Android Appstore on August 20, 2025
On August 13, Amazon announced on its official website that it will discontinue its Android app store—the Amazon Appstore—on August 20, 2025. This Amazon Appstore closure will impact users in over 200 countries and regions who have relied on the platform for a curated selection of games and applications.
According to the announcement, starting August 20, apps downloaded from the Android Appstore may no longer function properly on Android devices. However, this Android app store shutdown will not affect services on other Amazon devices, including Fire TV and Fire tablet apps, which will continue to operate as usual.
Amazon also confirmed that any remaining balances in Appstore accounts will be automatically refunded after the shutdown. While specific refund procedures have not yet been announced, users can proactively cancel auto-renewals and app subscriptions through the Appstore’s “Account Services” section.
In its statement, Amazon explained that the decision aims to reallocate resources toward improving the Appstore experience on its own devices. As the majority of users now access the Appstore through Fire TV and Fire tablet apps, the company will focus on delivering a better, more tailored experience for these platforms.
It is worth noting that the Amazon Appstore previously served as the default marketplace for the Windows 11 “Windows Subsystem for Android” (WSA). However, following Microsoft’s decision in March to end development and support for WSA, related Appstore services in that environment had already been discontinued.
As this Amazon Appstore closure approaches, developers, content providers, and businesses should prepare to adapt their distribution strategies.
