Alright so I worked at an Amazon warehouse over the summer. It was my first job by the way, so I can't compare it to any other places I've worked. And with the conditions I describe remember, I'm from the US in Illinois, a state that's pretty liberal. So my conditions could be better or worse than someone else's.
First a few things that surprised some people
You don't even need an interview to get the job.
The place seems to over hire, meaning that there's almost always vto (voluntary time off) available. This doesn't pay if anyone was wondering.
You came with just a drug test and a background check and you can leave just by going to the employee app and putting in your last day.
They tell the seasonal workers that they'll get benefits, they will not. There are opportunities to move up from seasonal, but until then you're temporary.
Employees come and go very quickly. I was introduced to like three people who were supposed to be in charge in a 3 month span.
There was a mens and a womens bathroom, side by side at the front of the warehouse. They were the only bathrooms.
Unless if you count the bunch of porta potties outside because counting up the days those toilets weren't working, it was about a month. It got to the point where they put trailers that had restrooms in them. Those were surprisingly air conditioned.
If you're part time you get a paid 15 minute break. Full time gets an unpaid 30 minute lunch.
Shit breaks. A lot. Don't rely on shit not breaking. I went through about 6 scanning devices before getting one that worked and by then I was edging to a panic attack.
There's a first aid supply box on some of the walls. It's like a luxury first aid box they even had wipes for your glasses. There were a few times though that I went there for painkillers and there weren't any.
The warehouse isn't air conditioned. They have fans overhead but sometimes they weren't even on and I've worked in some parts of the warehouse where you can't even feel any sort a breeze.
There were fans sitting around that weren't on. The front desk had a whole huge fan facing them when they were literally just sitting on laptops.
In my last month they started to cover the doors. Why? Don't know. But the tint of the cover was red and I felt like I was in hell.
During prime week (week, because that's how long it takes to get out all those boxes) there was a sudden loss of safety and packages were even getting thrown at people. I was blocked in almost every day by all the over sized packages.
The regular employees were nice to me but some other people felt differently. People are usually nice to me because I look like a scared puppy
Any sort of ambassador was a different story most of the time except for a select few (when I left there were a bit more nice ones that just got promoted)
Normally when I asked them for anything they were apathetic (I asked not to pick because I have no ankle movement in my right side, it hurts when my body tries, and that I have no balance. The Nice One just moved me to a different spot while someone else told me to get a doctor's note which was never mentioned to me before hand... you know... for a part time seasonal job that doesn't even give vacation days) and nit picky (one guy in particular I hate because he once took a bunch of my oversized boxes and stacked them on top of each other on the floor, they didn't fit, he told me to try again and walked away). If they didn't know they'd make something up.
Last but not least, this was a job where you had to be doing something constantly. Which is nice, if there's a clear line of what you can do. Most of the time I walked in circles and hoped no one noticed so that way they wouldn't ask if I wanted to leave early.
