its so fucking weird because "masks in healthcare" should be the default all of the time. Doctors and nurses are literally employed to go from sick person to sick person, treating immunocompromised people especially often.

Genuinely what does invert mean?

It's from the theory of sexual inversion, basically that queers assigned male are in some way partially women and queers assigned female are in some way partially men and bisexuals are half man and half woman (often either their souls or their minds). This was pretty big during the 19th century as an explanation for queerness, and it did not differentiate between trans people and cis gays; in fact, a common idea was that all queer people made up a "third sex," even if it wasn't physically apparent (look into uranians for more on that). This was the first step from "queerness is a bad thing you do" towards "queerness is a nature you are born with"

"Invert" was, for a time, a common way for queer people to identify themselves. Although it was born from pathologizing queerness, it was also used by people who called for queerness to be accepted. Both Jennie June (an early transfem activist) and Radclyffe Hall (butch & famous author of the early lesbian novel The Well of Loneliness) described themselves as inverts, & both wrote books meant go elicit sympathy for inverts and called for them to be accepted as they are. Some people don't like having sexuality and gender blurred, but for me terms that don't make that divide are a lot comfier, so I like invert a lot for the same reason I like "dyke" and "faggot" (which also blur that boundary). Also I'm a huge nerd.

Suddenly struck with a need to explain to you how boat pronouns work (I work in the marine industry).

When you're talking about the design of the boat, you say "it".

When the boat is still being built, your say "it".

When the boat is nearing completion, you can say "it" or "she".

When the boat is floating in the water you probably say "she", unless there is still a lot of work to be done (e.g. no engine yet) then you say "it".

When the boat is officially launched and operating, you say "she". If you continue to say "it" at this point you are not incorrect but suspiciously untraditional. You are not playing the game.

If you are referring to a boat you don't really know anything about you may say "it" ("there's a big boat, it's coming this way"). But if you know its name, it's probably "she" ("there's the Waverley, she's on her way to Greenock").

If you are talking about boats in general, you say "it" ("when a boat is hit by a wave it heels over")

If you speak about a boat in complimentary terms, it's "she" ("she's a grand boat"). If you are being disparaging it may be it, but not necessarily ("it's as ugly as sin", "she's a grotty old tub").

If she has a boy's name, she's still she. "Boy James", "King Edward", "Sir David Attenborough"? The pronoun is she.

If it's a dumb barge (no engine), you say it. But if it's a rowing boat (no engine), you say she.

I hope this has cleared things up so that you may not be in danger of misgendering floating objects.

I maintain that the best summation of my feminist beliefs are that men and women are not fundamentally different. There are a few quantifiable differences if you average out every woman and every man, but they are not qualitative. And most of them are socially constructed, and would be fixed if we started treating men and women the same. Neither is inherently smarter, neither is inherently kinder, neither is inherently more stoic or stronger or angrier or softer. Everyone is obsessed with the differences between women and men, with finding them and creating them and distancing themselves from the "other half". It's fucked up
