An area of land in Gümüşsuyu, comprising part of Ayaspaşa Cemetery in Taksim, was bought from the Turkish government by the German Empire in order to position a mission building in İstanbul. The construction of the Embassy Palace, in Neo-Renaissance style, was begun by the architect-engineer Herbert Göbbels in 1874, but was finished by Albert Kortüm after Göbbels passed away. The embassy was opened in 1977 by Ambassador Prince Heinrich VII. Once Turkey was declared a Republic, all embassies were moved to Ankara and the building became the Consulate General of Germany. Today the building serves as the consulate, visa office and the German Archeological Institution.
