  Anticipation has risen to a fever pitch with Ryan Coogler’s Fruitvale Station finally opening in Bay Area theaters this Friday! The Film Society has had the great honor of bearing witness to and supporting the development of this award-winning film from its earliest stages to its completion and we are all immensely proud of Ryan.  It was through our Off the Page program—where we bring actors to the Bay Area to workshop scripts with writer/directors—that Ryan was able to invite actors Melonie Diaz and Michael B. Jordan to familiarize themselves with the Bay Area and to meet Oscar Grant’s family prior to beginning production.  The project was also awarded  $200,000 through our SFFS/Kenneth Rainin Foundation Filmmaking Grant (currently open to apply) for its production. It is evident that Ryan’s passion and that of his cast and crew have made this story an incredibly powerful film that will not only have a significant impact on audiences, but on the Bay Area filmmaking community as well.
