-Tell us about yourself and what got you started as they synthwave project Pablo Johnson which you later changed to your real name Joey Mercedes.
Honestly, Pablo Johnson has always been a nickname, my friends gave it to me years ago, and it just stuck. I thought it sounded cool, and I've always been into music, so why not give a try. Pablo seemed like the perfect name to begin with. Now, my work is released as Joey Mercedes, my real name.
-Where are you from? Have you tried to connect with your local scene?
I live in Peekskill, New York. I have some friends that are in the local scene, and actually plan to do a few shows soon.
-Do you ever work with any other musicians?
Sometimes. I have friends that have bands and projects of their own and we'll jam, bounce ideas, and shoot the shit.
-Are there any people that you share you music with to het their opinion or bounce ideas off of them?
Definitely! I have some friends in this scene as well, we share tunes that we're working on, music we're listening to, and what's inspiring us at the moment.
-It's been a while since you've last released music. How would you say your sound has evolved and what have you learned since your previous release?
I really took my time with this one. Although "Varial" was a lot of fun to work on, sometimes I feel that I should have spent more time perfecting it.
-What is your DAW of choice? Have you previously used others? What made you choose and settle on this one in particular?
When I started creating I always used Reason. Nowadays, I alternate between Reason and Ableton, it's much more flexible. I've messed around with Protools and Logic, but it's really preference in the end. I manage to make it work in the end.
-What are some plugins or sample packs that you most enjoy using?
I'm a huge fan of Sonic Projects OP-X Pro II, it's all over the EP. Arturia's Prophet V is another one that I enjoy using. I rarely use sample packs, I like getting lost in what I'm writing.
-Can you tell us about your collection of hardware if you have any? Do you play any non-electronic instruments?
I run some of my tracks through an older VCR, depending on the vibe I'm going for. As for instruments, I have a bass guitar, which is all over the EP as well. I'm actually in the market for a Slim Phatty or MicroKORG, still trying to decide.
-Tell us a bit about the inspiration behind this particular EP. What is it about and what does it mean to you? Was there a particular vibe you were going for or an artist or album that inspired it?
I started working on it during the winter and through spring and summer, so I feel like as the songs progress, it's cold, but ends really warm. I was listening to a lot of The System, The Cure and New Order. I could definitely say that they inspire me.
-Finally, can you give any piece of advice to the producers reading on how to put together music like you do?
Never stop learning, there's always room for growth.
