These Days 05/04/14

How's things? 4 days in and May is shaping up to be quite the whirlwind.

Saw an amazing tribute to William Onyeabor at BAM last night. I can not recommend it enough if (when?) - it comes through your city. Would've taken photos, but I was too busy dancing! The Atomic Bomb band features Sinkane, Money Mark, Dev Hynes, David Byrne (DAVID. BYRNE) and so many other heavy hitters.

Today, picked 3 - yes 3 - winners for the instagram #workinghands contest, and will be sending out tubes of the Amelia, BK Calendula Hibscus Balm this week! Yay! Congrats all!

Some other highlights below, in pictures!

Rekindling my love affair with food- flatbread zza with bacon, asparagus,cherry toms, and sundried tomato paste! I ate the whole freaking thing.

Filling every surface in my apartment with infused oils, creating scent blends for the shop.

Sneaking in a little weaving with my coffee.

Visited the garden center in south Brooklyn... left with twice this amount. Whoops! Feeling a bit sneaky starting from plants instead of seeds, like I usually do. Patience has never been my strong suit, tho!

Lastly - there are still a couple spots left in my moccasin workshop next weekend! Saturday May 10th in Williamsburg, BK. You can find more info at carriagehousebirth dot com.

Show of Hands

  After 35 years,I’ve come to grips with the fact that I will never be a hand model.

When my then boyfriend (now husband) first held my hand years and years ago, he remarked “Wow - you’re hands are rougher than mine!” (They totally were! I was working at a skateshop and pretty close to sanded my fingerprints away with grip tape; he was a designer who sat at a desk and worked on a computer all day long).

Long story short, I have always had rough, working, crafting, making-things hands.

And I’m proud of them.

I’m proud of the scar where I jabbed myself with an exact-o while cutting sandal straps. I’m proud of the callouses on my fingers from seasons and seasons of hand knitting. I’m proud of the weird flat spot on my thumb where the leather needle has all but embedded itself.

There’s a great sense of pride that comes from looking at these weathered hands of mine, and then looking at things I’ve made with these hands. They tell my story. They make me feel like a part of a long history of makers, crafters, artists and artisans.

Green thumbs, etc.

Spent a lot of time with plants this week!

Clockwise from top left:

- I started juicing again - not because I'm detoxing or anything, just because I felt the need to balance my burger/ Easter candy intake with some vegetables. This is the pulp left from a salad sized pile of veggies!

- Spent some time experimenting with herbs for a Spring salve/ balm... Once I get it right, you can look for it in the shop!

- Cold-infusing some oil with roses (one of my favorite scents)... Trying to get a super strong infusion so will probably have to do it two or three times. Double infused oil is way more aromatic and eliminates the need for essential oils, which some people are allergic to. Working on a recipe for a mega moisturizing multi tasking lip balm/ skin stick and this rose oil will be the main ingredient. It already smells divine!

- The end of last week's tulips, which is a little sad but not really because it just means NEED MORE FLOWERS!

Hi, Hello, how-do?

Hello there!

Spring signifies new life and growth… Little sprouts poking out of the dirt after a winter sleep. What a perfect time for a first post!

Welcome to the tumblr of Amelia, Brooklyn. One of the positives to this endless NYC winter was plenty of time spent dreaming up Ameliabk.com!

Currently I’m working on stocking the e-shop, and getting the web stuff all sorted. Cannot wait to post sneak-peeks of all the new goodies.

Also - planning on teaching a moccasin workshop in May in Williamsburg- details to follow.

I wish you lived near me. Even better, with me so we could eat nice food and watch good films together a lot. Also, how amazing would the sex be?

Fuck it.

I always start talking to a lad and one of the following things happen

1. I've just been a second choice whilst they talk to a prettier girl they like better

2. I'm being used for sex etc.

3. They make no effort what so ever

4. They say the loveliest cutest things without even meaning them

5. We just stop talking. Like, we've talked 24/7 and one day it all just stops.

Everyone there with boyfriends to cuddle in this cold weather and Im there wrapped in about 20 layers due to a lack of other person in this bed. The life I lead is brilliant.
