is the browning m2, also called the ma deuce, most often known as the m2hb after its most common configuration, the heavy-barreled configuration! it’s a weapon that’s managed to stay in military service for 100+ years simply by being extremely versatile
it was initially developed at the tail end of ww1 as an anti-aircraft (and precautionary anti-tank) weapon, but by ww2 aircraft and tank technology had come a long way so it didn’t really fit that niche anymore
during the inter-war years the water-cooled version of it was adopted by the u.s. coastal artillery as an anti-aircraft weapon, but it was rejected by other branches of the armed services, mostly due to how heavy it was and because at the time it had a handful of mechanical issues that were fixed in the interim
and then durin ww2 proper it saw use as everything from a stationary machine gun, a tank turret, to a wing-mounted machine gun for large aircraft! these were generally in different configurations; the water-cooled and heavy-barreled versions were preferred by units on the ground while aircraft usually had the light-barreled configuration because the airstreams surrounding a flying aircraft were enough to cool the barrels
it was also seen as a mounted gun in ground vehicles, primarily as a defensive anti-aircraft weapon, but post-ww2 rather than becoming obsolete it was utilized a general purpose mounted vehicular weapon, and that’s where we dtill see it in service today!
i iust think it’s super cool that it’s managed to remain in service for so long
