tw: animal abuse and hoarding

long story short, my dad lied to me.

my dog and two cats are trapped in a hoarders-level cesspool of a house and are surrounded by human and animal waste, rotting food, and broken windows.

i cannot take my dog in my current housing situation, not even with an ESA letter, because of other pets she would hurt.

i need to get a down payment on a trailer or manufactured home as soon as possible and get her out, but even that won't happen soon enough. she is still in danger every moment she is there and so are the cats.

IF YOU ARE IN THE WESTERN/UPSTATE NY AREA AND CAN FOSTER (YES, TEMPORARILY) A LARGE, ANIMAL AGGRESSIVE DOG, PLEASE CONTACT ME. I WILL PAY FOR FOOD AND CAN PROVIDE A CRATE FOR THE DURATION OF THE FOSTER. SHE IS ANIMAL AGGRESSIVE AND ABSOLUTELY CANNOT GO TO A HOME WITH ANOTHER DOG OR CATS, OR ONE WHERE SMALL ANIMALS OR BIRDS ARE NOT SEPARATED.

His namesake comes from the fact that he pecks (or bites!) everyone and everything. I'm looking forward to putting this feisty little man in charge of a flock of his own when he's full-grown.

Newcastle Disease Spreading

A dangerous respiratory virus of poultry is spreading in the USA because people are ignoring quarantine zones. It started in southern California and has now spread to Utah.

PLEASE ABIDE BY QUARANTINE ZONES. DO NOT ALLOW THIS DISEASE TO SPREAD.

Bird friends with any type of bird in the USA, please take Newcastle disease VERY VERY SERIOUSLY. Like THE MOST SERIOUS. The government is so intense about controlling this disease (trying to protect commercial poultry operations, ugh, rant for another time) that they can and will destroy (yes, euthanize, sometimes not kindly, as mentioned in the article below) any birds in what they feel is an infectious zone, or if they have reason to believe your birds were exposed. Even pet birds, such as indoor parrots, falconry birds, any species of poultry; essentially, any bird we keep in captivity that they feel might be exposed! I’m not trying to scaremonger, but this has happened to people unexpectedly in CA in the past. They make task forces for this!! http://articles.latimes.com/2003/apr/12/local/me-birds12 “ Since the disease was discovered in September in a backyard flock of chickens in Compton, task force members have placed wide swaths of Southern California under quarantine. They walk door-to-door, searching for sick birds. If a bird is suspected of having the disease, it is killed immediately, in some cases in front of crying owners. “ (seriously read this article to get a scope of how scary this is, both pages) “ Maxwell learned from his mail carrier that USDA officials trying to eradicate the Exotic Newcastle disease have enlisted the postal service to report the addresses of bird owners. “

(note the language: mandatory euthanasia of birds, even if they test negative for the disease, in the neighborhoods in that list)

If you keep outdoor birds and live in these areas, make biosecurity your tippy top priority right now. 100% closed flocks! If possible, contain outdoor birds in enclosed areas temporarily (large coops, barns, etc). I’d also recommend temporarily halting the feeding of wild birds if you live in this area and have bird feeders. Go so far as to sanitize shoes when you exit/return to your property, even if you have specific “chicken shoes” you use on your chores. If you live in these areas, document (write down, snap photos) of what you are doing to reduce the chances of infecting your birds, just in case it helps you if your flock comes under suspicion. I found this list of disinfectants that are known to kill Newcastle virus, and bleach is on the list. Making a bleach dip near where you keep shoes is an easy step to take. please stay safe, guys. if you use any ventilation in your bird room that comes directly from outside, like a window unit air conditioner, put a thin towel over it or substitute it for a box fan. don’t feed birds outside, collect feathers (which is illegal anyway), be careful about droppings on your car or porch and wash any affected clothing immediately.

avian borne diseases are serious shit. take no risks. ensure the safety of you, your birds, and local wildlife.

I found this skull while cleaning the chicken coop. I’m thinking it belonged to some kind of fish or reptile, but I’m not an expert when it comes to bone identification. What do you think?
