Review: Anti-Flag - ‘American Fall’

Anti-Flag - American Fall November 3, 2017 (Spinefarm)

I’ve been a fan of political albums since I first heard Green Day’s American Idiot when I was nine; and that most certainly carried on into high school when both Rise Against and Anti-Flag became two of my favorite bands to listen to. In 2017′s political landscape, so many artists who I’d never thought would speak out on issues like this (Neck Deep, Knuckle Puck) are making waves, and even familiar faces like Green Day are releasing some of the best music of their career.

This time around we're getting a taste of Anti-Flag’s new album, American Fall, which is by far one of the best Trump-era political albums to reach my library, especially with weak presentations from Rise Against’s Wolves and Against Me!’s Shapeshift With Me. So far, Green Day’s Revolution Radio might as well be my favorite. Anti-Flag is right up there with the perfect blend of ska and pop-punk.

“American Attraction” welcomes us to a world that is Trump’s America: one with big guns and a passion for war. One of my favorite tracks on the album is the Flogging Molly sound-a-like “When the Wall Falls” which is fronted by an exclamation point gang-vocal-led chorus, ‘if they come for you in the night, they’re gonna come for me in the morning.’ “Racists” is a pop-punk anthem that commemorates the infamous Trump campaign and the wild hate comments that he invites.

Even deeper tracks on the album are some of the most exciting songs Anti-Flag has written since 2006′s For Blood and Empire. “Liar” is an aggressive protest track dedicated to, you guessed it, Donald Trump. Near the end, “Throw It Away” fosters Anti-Flag’s pop melodies in a song that is unbelievably accurate (’you’ve been given everything just to throw it away’).

All-in-all, Anti-Flag have certainly delivered one of their best this time around in an album that is all the more accurate. If you have any interest at all in the world’s current situation, I recommend giving American Fall a listen.
