His hands curled into tight fists against the kitchen counter; breath hitching and shoulders tensing. The sudden flare of dizzying anger left him rigid. For a moment, he struggled not to bend the butter knife in his grip, to send the plate of scones flying across the room.

He held onto a tiny vestige of calmness as the tension built in his lungs, only to draw itself out into a long, heated breath.

The day itself had been miserable. He wasn’t unconvinced that God had had it in for him the moment he woke up as everything had worked together so perfectly to sour his mood. When the doorbell rang and he remembered that Alfred was visiting—of course, today of all days—he barely kept a lid on his temper as he welcomed him inside.

The question, innocently-poised, tipped him over the edge, so to speak, and the wall of frustration he held in all day came spilling out, barely kept at bay.

“I told you. I’m fine,” England snapped, his tone suggesting very much otherwise, if his body language wasn’t enough of a clue.

Cirque

    [Phoenix]- Was this even the right place? Technically, there weren’t many other circuses that came into town under the old Big Top tent like this one, not these days. Victoria happened upon this poster in the strangest places- in an alleyway behind her place of work which she discovered after she went out for a smoke (she really needed to quit). There was no address, just a list of vague directions towards a small town and then to just ‘follow the lights.’ Which she did. Not that she had much else better to do.

    The circus was, strange to say the least. Something in her being stirred at the sight of the large lights that covered the area. Something, familiar with their warmth and intimidating with their glare. Her feet seemed to move on their own as she approached the large iron gate. So far, there seemed to be no one else around- no wait, there was someone, sitting at a table. Was he the ticket master or something? Still, he was the only other soul in this place that she could see so far and that was something comforting at least.

    Unless this turned out to be a massive scam and he was some dodgy fucker aiming to scalp her or something. Get a grip, Vicky.

    “Um, am I at the right place?” she asked as she approached, holding up the poster for emphasis. The guy looked about her age, sans the strange clothes and the exuberant youthful glow that seemed to stream from his face. Proper golden boy this one.

The child is scowling up at him, a scrutinizing look on his features as he seems to judge everything about him. He cheeks puff out in a huff and he keeps frowning.

“ You look annoying and stupid. ”    Deadpanned, with absolutely no remorse, and the unfathomable harsh bluntness of a child who doesn’t give two fucks.
