Do you remember this face? Sleepy Hollow, anyone? Nicole Beharie first got my attention in the 2008 film "American Violet," where she played Dee Roberts, a single mother struggles to clear her name after being wrongly accused and arrested for dealing drugs in an impoverished town in Texas. As impactful as "American Violet" was to Beharie's career & viewers, especially in regards to a fresh and inspiring storyline. This is what Nicole has to say about "American Violet?"
"Every other script with a young black woman she is dancing or having someone's kid. This was a hopeful story. Somebody standing up for something. It's about a woman, a black woman. You don't really see parts like this for women under 30. I didn't think I was going to get it. This story is presented in a personal way."
This Julliard trained actress who attended South Carolina Governor's School for the Arts and Humanities in Greenville, SC as a young woman was the first student to receive the prestigious Robin Williams Scholarship at Julliard. She was the first recipient by unanimous vote from Julliard's drama division faculty. This American born Jamaican and Nigerian ancestry will to glow on TV screens nation wide with the new season Sleepy Hollow just as she did on film screens internationally with Jackie Robinson biopic "42!"
