Where do I begin? The photos do not even begin to explain what I just witnessed tonight. Ameriville is a Round House Theatre production company that travels the country addressing the issues the world is facing today. They do this in a more modern sense while assimilating our roots. Their originally produced 5 hour dramaturgy slash play was minimized by their director to 90 minutes; talk about DIFFICULT! They incorporate jazz, hip-hop, the method of call and response that was utilized by slaves once upon a time and the technique of strolling and stepping. They also rearrange the chairs and tables they have their "fictional" setting.
Story time, children! They beat box their way to tell the tragic stories of the forgotten victims of Hurricane Katrina and their post-lives. They bellow about the poverty, injustice and strife that strikes the world. They joke about the government, media and prejudice in a way that it will be less offensive than it is the truth. They stated historical facts as well as the reality we choose not to consume. Last but not least, they promote our people to become producers rather than consumers by ending the play with on a strong note about how reality television isn't reality and why these stars are overpaid. Why do we take shelter in our Twitters, Facebooks and Myspaces when there is an entire world out there that needs US. . . The youth in particular? They state that we do not use our voices; we would rather have someone else dictate our lives. They point out that we are our own enemies, for we created these problems; we created global warming, prejudice alongside "post-traumatic stress" are just terms that were socially constructed and hold no type of value. They end with these words: "Freedom surely isn't free."
The show will be in Boston at The Paramount Theatre on 559 Washington Street, Boston, MA! Right off of the Boylston of the Green Line! Click here for more details! This will be the best 90 minutes of your life or at least the most informative!
Based off of what I said and through your own speculations, do you think you have a say in what is being presented to you? Are you a producer or consumer? Or are you both? Are a lot of 'terms' a social construct? Why are there so many labels in this world? Is freedom a social construct? Do we 'pay' for our freedom? What issues do you think I didn't raise here?
