I think part of the reason it got that way is that lots of folks started on a controller that had a directional pad and at most three buttons, and then generations built outward from there. I think aminil had a great idea, with the movement. Try and focus on getting familiar with the camera first. You could try inverting the vertical and see if that feels better. Just walk around and look at stuff! That's the best part of the game anyway!

The number one mistake I see fairly new gamers on consoles make is that they try to input the 'looking around' stick and 'walking' stick as two separate inputs, sequentially. My advise is always: Completely concentrate only on the looking around stick. Only ever push forward on the 'walking' stick. The character moves where you're looking, so only concentrate on the looking stick and just either push forward on the walking stick or do nothing on the walking stick.
This is great advice all around! Thank you, friends! (And yes, much to my chagrin, I discovered pretty much right off the bat that inverted worked a lot better for me on console.)
