academic vs creative, or is it?

The traditional nomenclature distinguishes between "academic/scholarly writing" and "creative writing," putting them in two separate categories. I have long considered this division unhelpful in the long run. Yes, don't explain, I understand what they mean and why they are necessary, I am a uni lecturer who deals with texts. Still, there is overlap. Good fiction often involves extensive research, while academic books that lack poetry can be dull. I guess it's like with colours, as a kid, you learn to name green and yellow, but later you discover mint, sage, olive, lime, and lemon... (The division of the colour spectrum varies across cultures and amongst individuals, of course.)

When I allow myself to write articles with a sense of freedom, it always flows and comes out better. Then the editing has to be thorough! Similarly, when I write for the stage, I am particular about the tools, the structure, and the rules. Maybe that's just my strategy, not sure.

Amos Oz z"l once said in an interview that he used black and blue pens for his novels and his political essays, respectively, to remember which genre he was dealing with when at work. I find this approach super interesting. Also, I wonder what architects think about this issue. ;-)
