These were a series of commissions by one customer who wanted some of your cardinal mythical creatures. amphiptere, cockatrice, and basilisk . These are watercolors. I do need to give these new life.

Can be kept as pet?: NO. not only will it probably kill you, but the license to handle one is nearly unfathomably expensive unless you've been assigned one by royalty.

Notes: YES, THE NAME'S CONFUSING. WE NAMED IT BEFORE WE SEPARATED WYRMS AND AMPHIPTERE.

Extinct in the wild due to elves exterminating full libraries of them, very few remaining forbidden bookworms are used to guard written texts that must be preserved, but not read unless TRULY DIRE circumstances are in effect. This includes the actual necronomicon, most known scrolls of terasque summoning, divine favors, the book of universal knowledge, the book of the dead, wish scrolls, and, perhaps most importantly, an entire library filled with maginuclear trapped wizard spell books.

If you ever wondered why you're not allowed to fill an entire book with glyphs of wardring fireball, THAT LIBRARY IS WHY. They're so charged we can't destroy them, if we tried, it could take out a city. WE HAVE ONE BUILDING FILLED WITH THREE THOUSAND OF THEM. We have filled that library with the entire remaining population of forbidden bookworms. That is their entire habitat now.

With the exception of other forbidden bookworms in differing locations. My forbidden bookworm guards the dragon tome, and my kingdom's tax documents. It has killed nine people so far.

I'm not telling you how it kills you, because it is very important to the continued existence of the world that they can catch you by surprise.

Friend Folio: Amphiptere

The Amphiptere is probably best known for its frequent appearances in European heraldry. I say "probably" because that's about the only thing I can find about it online, and going through a bunch of books on European dragonology isn't on my docket. From what it looks like, the amphiptere's general shape pops up a lot in antiquity, likely owing to its relative simplicity.

While the flavor isn't anything to write home about, the statblock has a few interesting tidbits, including an automatic pin upon a confirmed tail critical and an amusing limitation to its flying speed. So, without further ado...

It has been a very bad day for Matsura Ietaka, Deputy Minister of Health and kuwa gunslinger in disguise. Presently, he's being dragged around by the hyperactive amphiptere that speared him on his vacation day hike, and the fact that he isn't dead yet is making it increasingly obvious that he's not actually human.

A minor Alsatian marquis is incensed that his family crest is being copied by even less relevant noble families. To compensate, he decides to redesign his logo to give his amphiptere a greater level of detail -- and he wants the real thing as a reference.

The kobold canyon villages of Scassari Plateau face displacement as Cavila's armies march eastward. While the goblins on the plateau have already pledged their support, their cavalry's amphiptere mounts are refusing to help on account of a centuries-old grudge.
