If you like post-apocolypse/dystopian/alternature future books but are tired of the "I FOUND MY ONE TROO LUV IN A HOPELESS PLACE!" saccharine vapidness going on in a lot of books lately, you should read Feed.

Bloggers are the trusted news source because the government sucked hard at informing the masses of the Rising, when people started reanimating after a cure for the common cold and the cure for cancer met up and morphed into a hungry virus that only exists to feed and spread itself. People are trying to take the world back and having some success. Life has moved on and people still try to live normally.

A brother/sister pair of adopted sibling bloggers get the chance of a lifetime, cover the presidential election. They uncover a problem brewing that looks small, but blooms into a big ol shit-blossom of conspiracy and terrorism and politics.

It's amazing. It hits you hard and doesn't pull punches. Characters die after you fall in love with them. People and animals get hurt. You'll feel sick at some of the things that happen because it's the kind of future they've made for themselves, the kind of future that could plausibly happen to us if we make the same choices. It's a human book, because it plays on weaknesses as well as strengths. There are consequences when actions are taken. It will make you sad, and laugh, and maybe even cry a little. It will make you angry because you'll see the parallels between our present and their world. If you aren't angry, you aren't paying attention.

It inspired me to start writing again, and when something inspires you to do anything, you share it.

You should read it. I can't wait to get my hands on the next in the series.
