VIDEO :: BOCCI shoot - stunning 'behind the scenes'

Canadian architect / lighting designer Omer Arbel unveiled The 21 Series – a hand-formed porcelain lighting collection inspired by the form of barnacles on a rock – for his brand BOCCI at Euroluce during Milan Design Week 2013.

Like all BOCCI lights, collections are designed to be used as individual lamps or positioned in groups; and with each piece being hand-made, no two lamps are identical, allowing unique installations to be created.

A thin strip of porcelain is draped over a ‘sandblasted borosilicate glass inverted trumpet diffuser,’ creating shapes in varying sizes.

VIDEO :: James Turrell's Wonderful New Skyspace Installation

Light artist James Turrell‘s installations fuse movements of colour and light within space, the works best experienced first hand with still imagery failing to capture the ‘experience’ of being in a constantly altering space.

The latest incarnation of Turrell’s SKYSPACE series, ‘The Colour Inside’ has been commissioned by public art program Landmarks at The University of Texas at Austin, with an elliptical white-plaster tower added to the existing campus roof. From the basalt bench rimming the internal walls, up to 25 visitors can experience the wonder of variable lighting, with the sky revealed via an oval opening in the ceiling, with viewers finding it often impossible to identify the sky from the ceiling.

Fusing sky, sun and chromatic saturation, custom programmed LED lights slowly morph hues of purple, pink, white, green and yellow – set to the backdrop of the constantly changing sky, visible through the circular aperture in the ceiling.

ARCHITECTURE :: Cantilevered Glass Observation Point

  A glass encased cantilevered observation point sits 200 meters above the Atlantic Ocean at Agulo, on the island of Gomera near Tenerife in the Canary Islands.

The cast concrete, metal and glass visitor centre was designed by José Luis Bermejo Martín.

ART :: British Gay Icons as Russian Dolls

A hand painted, limited edition Russian nesting doll series features British icons: Elton John, George Michael, Stephen Fry, Graham Norton and Tom Daley.

The brainchild of creative agency Mother London, the dolls were sold via online auction, with proceeds going to The Kaleidoscope Trust to support their work with the Russian gay community.

The Russian LGBT community is facing increasingly harsh treatment at the hands of authorities. Attacks on gay people are rising, in a country where homosexuality has been classified as a mental illness since 1999. In short, the Russian gay community needs help.

ICON :: The Simpsons '25th Anniversary' by Moleskin

As The Simpsons reaches a 25 year milestone, marking it the longest-running scripted show in TV history,  Moleskine are releasing a Limited Edition yellow notebook collection.

A selection of covers will feature either Bart or Homer, each package is accompanied by Simpsons-themed stickers. and an illustrated view over Springfield.

VIDEO :: Behind the Scenes on Joshua Tree's Lucid Stead

Artist Phillip K. Smith III has bought and adorned Lucid Stead, a previously abandoned 70-year-old shack in Joshua Tree, Mojave Desert California, creating a lineal, optical illusion.

Melding the original timber beam structure with mirrored panes, reflections of the arid landscape renders the edifice semi-transparent.

The installation is topped with a discreet solar panel discreet and its interior, which is inaccessible to the public, hides custom-built electronic boards and programming systems which power a lighting system. Travellers who pass the structure at dusk at night may see it suddenly begin to emanate glowing bands of light from its four windows.

Lucid Stead is about four ideas: light and shadow; reflected light; projected light; and change… It is about stopping and being quiet so you can truly see and listen.

By day the installation is a reflective artwork. By night – an LED art piece.

Step behind the scenes as the artist explains the work, revealing the evolution of the original, dilapidated shack from ramshackle ruin to it’s present incarnation as an art work.

The creativity of fashion editor / innovator Isobella Blow is celebrated in ‘Isabella Blow: Fashion Galore!” – an exhibition at Somerset House, London. The extraordinary life and wardrobe of the late fashion icon has been immortalised in the exhibition catalogue shot by photographer / director Nick Knight.

Nick Knight talks about his perception of the link between creativity and mental health issues in this frank, moving interview – probing the relationship between brilliance and madness.

The Question is raised whether the license to be creative is destructive in the end.
