I got to see Elza Soares this weekend, and it was pretty amazing. If you haven't heard her most recent album A Mulher Do Fim do Mundo do yourself a favor. It is easily the best record I've heard in the last few years...
For someone who is pushing 80, and has severe mobility issues (she fell off a stage during a performance about 10 years ago) she still managed to retain a commanding presence, with the aid of a "throne" where she towered over everyone, wearing a black dress made of twisted and knotted garbage bags that flowed all the way down and spilled over the front of the stage.
It was opening seating, and we got there early, so we managed to sit 2nd row center. It felt like she was singing just for me... haha super fan status... Anyway, here is a drawing I did after the show...
