au where dark phoenix's first act is not the ineffective (yet undeniably symbolic) battle with her teammates, but the murder of the man who surprised her for years -- charles xavier.
when charles finally confronts phoenix in the dark phoenix saga, he is facing a woman possessed, but who has realized the evil she has become. charles battles jean once she has consumed a world, five billion souls weighing down the phoenix and giving her leverage to fight herself.
if dark phoenix had found charles first, when there was no reason for jean to fight her new self, charles may not have won.

In the end, he can bring himself to say none of these things, but that has never mattered much when speaking to Charles. He spent so long hiding his thoughts from the other that it is a strange, nostalgic relief to know that he is understood. Especially now.
