Amy Fisher was an only child from Long Island, New York, US, who got a sports car for her birthday when she turned 16. Fisher’s father took her to his mechanic to get her car repaired; it was there she first met Joey Buttafuoco, 36 who was married with young children.
Amy fell in love with Joey, he flirted with her and the two had an affair. Joey gave her herpes and encouraged her to work as an escort. Amy wanted Joey to leave his wife to be with her, but he refused. Amy became obsessive and jealous of his wife, and believed if she got rid of Mary Jo then she could be with Joey.
On the morning of 19 May 1992, Amy left school early and was driven to Joey’s family home by a friend. She knocked on Joey’s door at 11:48 am, Mary Jo who was home alone answered the door and Amy told her that Joey was having an affair with her younger sister which Mary Jo didn’t believe and told Amy to leave. Amy hit Mary Jo on the head with a gun and then shot her in the head. Amy fled, whilst neighbours came to assist Mary Jo. Mary Jo endured 7 hours surgery and survived. Mary Jo wrote down that a girl, aged 19 had shot her. Joey informed police about Amy having feelings for him (but didn’t tell them about their affair he was having with her).
Amy was arrested and was later bailed for $2 million. She was found guilty and served 7 years in prison and released in 1999. Since then, she has apologized to Mary Jo and there were times when she said she felt no sympathy towards her. Amy got married and had children and later got a divorce. She worked in the adult film industry and now works as an internet model.
Joey pled guilty to statutory rape and served 6 months. Mary Jo initially stood by her husband and threw a party for him when he was released from prison. He has since been involved in crime for fraud and other misdemeanours. Mary Jo eventually realised that her husband was a liar and narcissist and divorced him in 2003. In 2006, Amy, 32 and Joey, 53, reunited in 2006 for a publicity stunt.
