Fun with Etymology

I was inspired by Sam trying to pick apart the root words of “Cognouza” and “Somnovem” that I did some etymology Googling. (Disclaimer: I’m not an expert; I’m not an etymologist; I just liked figuring this out and speculating!)

Here’s the quote (and the spelling) I’m referencing, courtesy of Lore Master Dani Carr:

“Nonagon is a vessel. It is a key to Cognouza. It is the one to free the Somnovem.” -Lady Vess DeRogna(’s corpse)

Cognouza

“Cogn-” probably comes from “gnosc-”, a Latin root meaning, “know”.

“Nou”, best I could tell, could come from “nōmen”, a Latin root for “noun” or “name”.

I couldn’t find a singular definition for “-za”, except that it shows up in a lot of Italian loan words (extravaganza, stanza, pizza). “Ze” is a Greek root meaning “boil”; maybe that’s something? (Probably not).

So, Cognouza to do with the knowledge of names/nouns; my guess is it’s some kind of key to ultimate knowledge or omniscience.

Somnovem

“Somn-” is a Latin root meaning “sleep”.

“Nov-” could could from Latin “novus”, “new”, or

It could be from Latin “novem”.

Meaning NINE!

Another nine! Mighty Nein! Eyes of Nine! Nine schools of magic! Nonagon is a shape with nine sides! So many nines!

So, the Tomb Takers and Vess were trying to free the Nine Sleeps. Looking forward to finding out what that means!
