Analog Sunset - Only If

The dudes in Analog Sunset were kind enough to let us release their second EP “Shapes” a year ago. They’re kind of what started it all. Only If is one of the best songs on that EP, with a hook that just screams to be sung along to in the summer sun. The almost-lo-fi warmth and upbeat tempo of the song (and most of the EP) still gets us excited a year later, and we can’t wait to keep working with these guys.

 Please list all of your band members and their roles in the band. Josh Forest - Guitar/ Vocals Joe Martorelli - Bass/ Vocals Joe Pietrocola - Drums

What's your hometown (or what are your hometowns)? JOE M: We all live in different cities< JOSH: Hartford, Beantown, Springfield, in that order.

How did the band come together? How long has it been? JOE M: We were all best friends throughout college and had a band during that time as well. JOE P: The band we started in college was really a great learning experience for all of us.   JOSH: Couple years after we graduated college we all realized something was missing. We played music together constantly in school, but after graduation that all ended. Martorelli called me up and said, “we’re wasting the only time we’ll ever get in our lives to play music together.” I realized he was right, and I had a few songs already written that I thought could be the perfect start for a new project. All along, we knew we’d ask Joe P to be our drummer. So after demoing some stuff out, we started jamming on the songs as a live band.

How have you grown since you started? JOE M: Not very much actually. All of us are pretty much as tall as we will get at this point in our lives.

What sets you apart from other bands? JOE M: I feel like we are not afraid to try something new or put totally opposite genres together in the same song. We play what we like and we all like a shit load of different music. All of that comes through in our songs and we hold nothing back that may be 'too happy for us", "too sad for us" or too "mainstream for us" We don't put a label on music or take ourselves too seriously.

What's the best part about being in your band? JOE P: Playing music, traveling, hanging out and growing as people in a band with your best friends.  Can’t beat that.

JOSH: There’s nothing better than having the opportunity to play music with your two best friends. Without the band we’d probably see each other a lot less because we’re not all located in the same city anymore. This band is the best excuse we have to get together and fuck around like old times.

 More times than not, influences tend to bleed through. What bands are currently inspiring the music that you’re making? JOSH: I can’t stop listening to Too Shabby by Rozwell Kid. Weezer’s Blue Album will always be my favorite. Diamond Youth writes some kick ass songs and I’m really looking forward to their first full length. JOE M: AGBPOL, The Clippers, Weezer, Bruno Mars, Billy Joel, Title Fight. JOE P: Around the time we were writing the new material, I was listening to a lot of Dave Matthews Band, Phoenix, Arctic Monkeys, and random reggaeton and reggae, although my backbone has always been Glassjaw, Thursday, and ATDI.

 What would you say the band has already accomplished and what do you have your eyes set on next? JOE P: We’ve been DIY from the start.  Putting out our first release was a huge undertaking but an even bigger reward.  Teaming up with a new indie label for our sophomore release looks to be a great opportunity for both parties, which we’re very excited about.  And after that, we’ll be doing some live session videos, playing more shows, writing more music, and doing what we love.

Thus far, what’s a favorite memory or something quirky that’s taken place with the band (in-studio, onstage, or elsewhere)? JOE M: Joe P almost choked to death on an aspirin at practice once. JOE P: Cooking up some crazy, elaborate meal during band practice when you can very easily order a pizza.

Is there anything in particular that you’d like people to take away from listening to your music? JOE M: I just hope people enjoy listening to it honestly. The lyrics definitely have a deep meaning to us and I'd like for listeners to find something that they can relate to in their own lives through what we write. JOSH: That’d be cool if they’re still singing the chorus for the rest of the day after they’ve listened to one of our songs, but lets be real that only happens for T. Swift, right?

If you could change something about the music industry, what would it be? JOE P: Do away with the big name box stores, top 40 radio stations, and widely televised music awards shows that glamourize the same 1% of the industry year after year after year. There is more music out there than we know what to do with, yet we’re surrounded by pop/rock/country hits from five, ten, fifteen years ago. JOE M: Nothing, it's going to shit and I'm glad because it's forcing it in a better direction in my opinion. I feel like we are in a time of transition and I like seeing the power transfer over to smaller labels and bands rather than only a handful of big corporate labels that control what everyone listens too. JOSH: I’d take all that shitty pop music off the charts and start signing rock bands again like they did back in the good ol’ days. However, the realist in me knows that’ll never happen. So let’s just say it’d be nice if indie bands could make a little more money with their music.

How did your band’s name come about? JOE M: I work in the AV industry and received an email from my boss about the "analog sunset" that was approaching and we had to switch everything from analog to digital. A co-worker of mine laughed and thought it would make a good band name. Once we decided to start a band again, our name seemed to be ready to go.

What's the biggest mistake someone's made while playing? JOE M: Mistakes are fun.

Any pre-performance rituals? JOSH: Well as much as I’d like to say we never hit the stage without throwing back six tequila shots and drinking five jack n’ cokes, we’re just not nearly that cool. I don’t think we really do anything ritually.

JOE P: A quick meal, a shot of tequila, and a good laugh.
