"Baby Mama" by Union feat. Mani Hoffman
Hey kids! Do ya like Daft Punk, but hate all the hype? Me neither. I can lose myself to dance for days. Yet I offer you another French duo with a flair for the electronic.
Union is more Kraftwerk than Discovery. Definitively futuristic, but with it comes a mighty helping of hip-hop to give it a unique flavor. The group consists of producers OJ and Gold (can't decide if that's a Trading Places reference or not). The two UNITED (ha!) in 2009 and not long after sent a demo to Brooklyn's Fat Beats Records.
Fat Beats is a damn fine fit for Union. The label also represents Murs' new project The White Mandingos, Black Milk and his new collaboration with Danny Brown: Black and Brown, Will Sessions and Masta Ace among other talented artists.
This little ditty is off of their debut released last year called Analogtronics. The song features French crooner Mani Hoffman. It's a good one, but the entire album is worth a few thousand revolutions in part for the appearances.
It's a sampler platter of underground hip-hop mastery. Chicago's own true seeker Talib Kweli spits it for "Time Leak," where some chick in granny panties is powered by Union's music, which in its physical state is actually made of blue slushie. Fat Beats alum Roc Marciano shows a little love. One of my favorite rappers, Slum Village's Elzhi made it on a single. MF DOOM is a hard man to locate, but you will find him on this album and for that I am very thankful.
Outside of the notable emcees though Analogtronics is still a damn fine piece throughout. And it's made with vintage keyboards and synthesizers with minimal to no sampling!
