Flat Worms — Antarctica (God?)

Flat Worms, out of LA, has sharpened its attack. The open-ended post-punk drones of the S-T and last year’s Into the Iris, have coalesced in a more streamlined aggression. The world falls to pieces over the course of these 11 bleak, blasted songs, but band that chronicles them has turned remorselessly, monstrously tight. When I reviewed their last album for Dusted, for Into the Iris, I approved a “head-nodding, body slamming, surprisingly tuneful catharsis.” All still good except for the head-nodding part. You can’t drift off in Antarctica. Someone is always poking you with a pointed stick.

The band, Flat Worms, remains the same, a well-connected West Coast punk trio comprised of Will Ivy on guitar, Tim Hellman on bass and Justin Sullivan on drums. They still operate within the orbit of Ty Segall, who helped record and mix the album.  But this one was done at Chicago’s Electric Audio with Steve Albini at the boards. The sound is harder, more precise and altogether more of a sock in the gut.

The title track, for instance, saws and sways through our world in flame, bass and drums knocking down a muscular groove while trebly, agonized guitar dances over top. Ivy sings with metronomic dispassion, stringing together surreal and mundane imagery (his dog makes a cameo) like Mark E. Smith at his most lucid. “The Aughts” bangs harder and faster, its tom-pounding beat making primitive, foundational space, its wailing, howling guitar veering off in arcs from there in fire trails across the sky.  The song counts off the decades without an iota of nostalgia — “the aughts, the teens, the tens, the teens, only a means to an end”—startled, perhaps, that we have all made it this far.

These songs flare up suddenly, their maniacal forward motion running smack into feverish bouts of sirening guitar.  The steadiness of their motorik progress makes a space for the anarchy of their agitated fills. The spates of shreddy abandon illuminate the boxy confines of beat and vamp. What I’m saying: chaos and regularity work together in Flat Worms’ songs. The music takes off when it brings them together.
