Saint Astvatsatsin church, the staircase (XIII c.) - Novarank monastery, Amaghu Valley, 2025
The intrinsically carved pillars of the Ekambareswarar temple, Kanchipuram. The temple is believed to be in existence from 2nd century CE with extensive additions and modifications through different dynasties.
The Odeon of Herodes Atticus is a stunning, ancient stone theater on the southwest slope of the Acropolis in Athens, built in 161 AD by Herodes Atticus in memory of his wife, Regilla. Fully restored in the 1950s, this 4,500-seat venue is famous for its excellent acoustics and continues to host major cultural events, including the Athens Festival, featuring concerts, operas, and classical tragedies under the stars. While it's a major historical site, it's primarily accessible during performances, with the best views often from the Acropolis itself.
History and construction
Builder: Herodes Atticus, a wealthy Athenian Roman citizen, built it as a memorial to his wife, Aspasia Annia Regilla.
Original design: It was a steep-sloped theater with a three-story stone facade and a wooden roof, originally seating 5,000.
Destruction: It was damaged in 267 AD by the Heruli tribe and fell into ruin.
Restoration: Major restoration work began in the 1950s, using Pentelic marble for the seats and stage.
Modern use and features
Venue: It is the main venue for the annual Athens Epidaurus Festival, running from May to October.
Performances: Hosts a wide range of events, from classical music and opera to modern concerts and theater.
Acoustics: The stone structure provides excellent acoustics, carrying sound effectively.
Accessibility: You can view the exterior from the Acropolis site, but entry is typically for ticket holders during shows.
