Day 3: Archaeopteryx, “ancient wing”

Another flappy; this time a feathered one! This dinosaur (yes, this one’s a dinosaur!) is one of my favorites. These were also from Jurassic Germany (like the Scaphognathus), where the most famous specimens were found and are now housed in museums in Eichstätt and Munich.

THE COOLEST thing about them, besides the obvious link between birds/dinosaurs, is that in 2011 a man named Ryan Carney did a color study on the structure of melanosomes within the fossilized feather. What he found is that the archaeopteryx had some black coloration within its feathers. THUS, for the first time, we know the actual color of a dinosaur! *AWWW, GEEKOUT*
