How far into worldbuilding for a canon character we know nothing about does it become an original Link story? Before or after you've thought up a whole storyline/hypothetical game?

Synopsis
After the events of Tears of the Kingdom, Link and Zelda are reunited at last. Although they are once again left in the aftermath of a war fought in different eras, they should finally be at peace… That is, until they are left restless in the night. A new burden plagues Link’s very soul, and Zelda is haunted by answers that evade her still. Together, they seek closure and a way to mourn— and incidentally are wrapped up in a missing fragment of Hyrule’s past they have overlooked.

My 2023 Zelink Week project was an attempt at getting a feel for the characters and vibes of the Ancient Past. It was also a part of the original draft of the TotK Rewrite, so I have changed a LOT - especially the portrayal of some of the characters. (Admittedly, I'm not a fan of how I portrayed the Ancient Hero at the time - I wanted him to behave similarly to pre-Calamity Link, but I didn't make it all that interesting.
To Control Fate
Ancient Zelda obtains the Triforce of Power, and Link obtains the Oracle of Power's mask.
On Forbidden Ground
Ancient Zelda meets the Ancient Hero in Damel Forest.
