Prepare for battle! . The huge stone amphitheatre at Pompeii is apparently the oldest known from the Roman period - dating to around 70 BC (Previous amphitheatres had been built from wood). Although the built structure itself is very impressive, it was also dug 6m into the ground, so that when you enter the main arena from outside, you go downhill. This also means that, unlike later amphitheatres, this first one did not have an underground area. . Amphitheatres in ancient Roman times were famously the site of gladiatorial battles, where trained fighters known as gladiators would fight each other, prisoners or criminals, and wild animals, all for the amusement of watching crowds. Researchers have predicted that the Pompeii amphitheatre would have held between 12,000-20,000 spectators. "The games" - as they were known - were incredibly popular. In fact, the amphitheatre was one of the first structures to be restored after the earthquake of 62 AD, which shows how important it was to the citizens of Pompeii. . The most important historic event associated with the Pompeii amphitheatre happened around 59 AD. A fight started between locals and citizens from the neighbouring town of Nuceria, likely caused (according to scholars) by an old enmity related to Pompeii's revolt against Roman colonization. An account by Tacitus states that what started as trifling taunts and jeers ended in a deadly brawl, with many left dead, wounded, or mutilated. Because of this, the Senate declared that the games would be banned in Pompeii for ten years. . To end on a more lighthearted note: After visiting the site, I watched the film "Pompeii" on my flight back home. It was very interesting to see how they incorporated details from the history and physical remains into the film. Road Rage . The majority of the roads that visitors walk along at Pompeii are also the original 2000-year-old roads, made from huge slabs of rock. The majority of the roads are single-lane, and include remarkably high pavements as well as large stepping stones placed to allow pedestrians to cross without having to step down into the road itself. These stepping stones are particularly abundant at Pompeii (with 316 in total - 20 times more than any other Roman city). The reason for this is that, even with the understreet sewage pipes, the road would often have been filled with runoff from rainstorms, water fountains, and all those other lovely liquids created by an average household... . One of my favourite parts of these ancient roads are the ruts created from hundreds and thousands of cart wheels trundling through the city. These can tell us the size of the cart, the type of cart, and even in some cases the direction of travel along each road. In some places the ruts are so deep that they seem to create little valleys. Not fantastic for a visitor with a recently dislocated knee...
