If you need historical inspiration for a grid-based city, the ancient Roman colony of Timgad(built around 100 CE) might help.

Most of those living in Timgad were retired soldiers, and focused on living a relaxed life in said retirement.

The well-preserved city had a theater, several baths, fountains, and even a library. The library alone was large enough to hold an estimated 3000 scrolls.

Raids and wars eventually led to the decline of Timgad, but it has stayed surprisingly well-preserved.

"A Roman cavalry helmet unearthed as part of the most important Iron Age discoveries ever made in the UK has been replicated to show how it might have looked some 2,000 years ago.
