Yom Kippur
Today is Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the year in Judaism. Also known as the Day of Atonement, it is traditionally observed with a period of fasting and prayer. Falling in the month of Tishrei, it marks the culmination of the 10 Days of Awe, a period of introspection and repentance that follows Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year.
There a number of objects in our collections that tell the story of Jewish history through art, dating as far back as 1800 BC. Pictured below is a Sumerian King List, a shard of Roman gold glass, and ceremonial wedding rings inscribed with Hebrew works and Jewish motifs.
You can find out more about these objects and many others on our Jewish Journey Trail.
The Sumarian King List provides important clues to the political and cultural context from which the early Hebrews and monotheistic Judaism emerged. The King List brings together two elements that are central to the earliest stages of the Jewish journey: the idea of divinely appointed leadership and the once mighty city-state of Ur. Both are linked to one of the most decisive moments in the Jewish story: the rejection of polytheism. Larsa, Mesopotamia (now S. Iraq), c.1800 BC.
These wedding rings are thought to come from Italy or Transylvania. Like earlier and later ones, they are inscribed with Hebrew words and decorated with Jewish motifs. One is decorated with a chuppah, the canopy beneath which the bride and groom stand during the wedding ceremony, an integral part of Jewish weddings to this day. Others are decorated with a little building, mounted on top of the ring, symbolising both the Temple in Jerusalem and the new home the couple will make together. The words mazal tov (‘good luck’ in Hebrew, as well as ‘congratulations’) appear on five of the six rings; sometimes the words are clearly visible, sometimes they are concealed inside the little house. Venice, Italy. 1500–1600.
This glass fragment comes from one of several Jewish catacombs in Rome. The Jewish community in Rome was large and well-established by this date. Many were the descendants of Jews transported there as prisoners-of-war or slaves in the course of Jewish revolts against Roman rule from 66 to 135 ce. Others had come to Rome in earlier centuries as merchants, notably from Alexandria in Egypt, because of trading links between Rome and the Levant. Some had come as Jewish delegates on diplomatic missions and never left. The fragment shows the left half of a menorah, the Jewish seven-branch candelabra, which tells us that it would once have belonged to a member of the Jewish community in Rome. Only around 500 gold glass medallions have survived, of which only fourteen have explicitly Jewish motifs, making this fragment and others like it extremely rare. Rome, Italy c.350.

ANCIENT ALIENS – MAYAN PROPHECIES AND CROP CIRCLES – THE SUMARIAN CONNECTION
THREE TIME AWARD WINNER - International UFO Congress EBE Awards, Best Documentary, Best Historical Documentary and Peoples Choice Award. Discover the stunning connection between the Crop Circles and Mayan Prophecies that go back thousands of years. Scholars and researchers have discovered an extraordinary connection between rare ancient 6000 year old Sumerian symbols, ancient symbols from the mysterious Mayan calendar, and a group of amazing signs and symbols found among crop circle formations believed to be extraterrestrial in origin, that are now appearing in the farmlands of the English countryside. What are these symbols collectively trying to say? Scientists believe that we are looking at a great symbolic message system, covering vast distances of historical time and space. However only now with the aid of advanced code breaking technology and the hard work of brilliant researchers, we have been able to connect the dots of antiquity, further unlocking a detailed set of messages that fortell a great prophecy about the future of our planet and confirmation of humanities extraterrestrial origins.
