I read an article on how large and developed a civilisation there was in the Amazon, and how utterly it was reduced by diseases brought across the Atlantic (without the Spanish and Portuguese even laying eyes on those peoples until they found the survivors, years or decades later) that we only just confirmed the existence of the cities there, and I experienced the most profound "Ozymandias moment" I've ever had. So much, lost so profoundly and even the knowledge it was there (not least as the rainforest grew so thoroughly over the ruins that Europeans later mistook the whole area for primal wilderness), without even coming within sight of the source.
