The cool thing about writing a Midsomer Murders fic that pokes at the elephant in the room of the supernatural being real is that 90% of the of the characters are hardline skeptics.
I say 90% because as logical as Jones is, he goes to his grandmother for village gossip and inside information and there's that throw away line in Second Sight about how she's superstitious and I feel like he's one of those skeptics that clings to rationality and reason because he knows there's shit out there he can't explain. He's had too many brushes with the Midsomer Weird to completely deny the idea that the supernatural flat out doesn't exist.
Troy's an odd duck. I feel like religious upbringing + long time exposure to the Midsomer Weird would either make him sort of oblivious to it (because obliviousness is one of his more endearing, if frustrating traits) or when there are no other explainations for what's happening, he'd accept an alternative because there's not much of a leap between believing in God and believing in the supernatural. He'd end up like Winston from Ghostbusters-- self aware enough to accept what's happening around him as real because to do so otherwise would be hypocritical and he knows it.
John and Scott would be the real holdouts, but for two different reasons. Scott's an outsider, he didn't grow up in Midsommer and his attitude always was "I don't want to understand what would make so many people so snake-fuckingly-crazy." His resistence is that he's genuinely afraid of staring into the abyss and seeing what stares back. And for what it's worth, Jones and Troy can't blame him for that, especially Jones as he's sort of in this state of lowkey constantly grappling with the Nightvale-ish horrorworld that is Midsomer county. Just because he can stare into that abyss doesn't mean he likes doing it. John on the otherhand, is too much like is cousin, and spends a lot of time agonizing over the idea that Tom has started to believe because it's so unlike him. John's less a Sherlock archetype and more a Poirot. There's a rational explation, there's always a rational explaination, anything else just doesn't jive with his understanding of reality. John's the one standing there saying that the whole thing has to be a case of mass hysteria or some such.
As requested by karissasorensen I have drawn Nugget!
don't they usually do this in alphabetical order?
