ruin me w/ angst: “Look at me - just breathe, okay?”
He didn’t know when he lost sight of her. When the chaos cleared there was no sight of her, only the many corpses of the red templars and their fallen comrades. He searched the bodies with baited breath, hoping he didn’t…
“Kadan!” When he found her she was barely conscious, but her eyes were open, if vacant. Kasari gasped for air, her lungs coming up empty, her breath coming in rapid intakes. Ashaban knelt beside her and grasped her hand. “Kadan, look at me!”
Her wide eyes focused on him and she rasped his name. “Shh, don’t speak, just breathe, okay?” He shouted behind him, “We need help over here! She’s hurt!”
“Ash…”
“Keep your focus on me Kas, okay? We’re gonna get you back and sort you you. Just keep looking at me and stay with me.”
He couldn’t think about anything other than making sure Kasari didn’t fall asleep. She needed to stay with him until they got help. His healing skills would only get them so far, but not far enough and not out here. He couldn’t lose her, he simply couldn’t.
It took four soldier to carry her off on a stretcher back to camp. Despite Ashaban’s insistence, they told him to tend to the other soldiers’ wounds while someone else treated Kasari. Instead, he kept pace with the soldiers and the stretcher. “If you think I’m leaving her side then you’ve clearly not met me. I’m staying and treating her myself, with help of another healer. Someone else can tend to the rest of wounded.”
The look on his face stopped the soldiers from arguing with him. His was the face of a man filled with worry and fear, the face of a man protecting his partner. They knew better than to mess with that man.
