I have a persistent vision of my wife getting fed up with my mentally ill bullshit and leaving me, which on its face is entirely plausible, but from there going on to become one of those women who shares stories online or among the people she knows about how she had to get out from their lunatic significant other, and everyone solemnly nodding their heads, marveling at her bravery, and wondering how she went on so long

#there was a meme floating around about this but one of the things that I think is difficult to capture or express about mental illness #is that there is always at least one part of your brain #that if it isn't perfectly rational #is at least somewhat outside you #and knows #if nothing else #that you are insane #and so at any given moment you are having the anxiety or the depression or whatever #and while that part of you is lashing out #this other part is viciously criticizing you for your stupidity and your weakness #and asking why you can't just get it together #and so you have the illness itself #and the shame of having the illness #and they reinforce each other
