Hey, saw your tags that you're a long-time Linux user. I've been considering for awhile moving off of Windows. Do you have a Linux distro that you'd recommend for a first-time user?

To start - my disclaimer that I am like. Very much not a programmer or anything! There is a lot I don't know about computers. However, I have been using linux for like. Over a decade at this point, so my advice comes from that experience.

Generally, the 2 most recommended flavours of linux for new users are 1.) Ubuntu or 2.) Mint

(You can also dual-boot, if you want to use linux for your personal life, but need to have Windows for work, or something.)

(I currently have a computer that runs dual-boot ubuntu/windows, and a computer that runs mint, so I say this as an active user of both.)

Ubuntu and Mint are designed to be easy to install, and they both have pretty solid documentation for how to fix things, if you run into trouble and need help.

Ubuntu I think is easier to set up in the very beginning, because the process for downloading the actual files are more streamlined.

My personal preference however is Mint. (Specifically Cinnamon).

It has a few extra steps for getting started, but I think it's more customisable in ways that I appreciate.

I think Mint also has a more active userbase currently?

If you search for pretty much any error you run into with Ubuntu, you'll probably find answers for it, but they may not be very recent.

In my experience, it's easier to find *current* support for issues with Mint.

That being said, usually, my first question for people wanting advice about what to switch to is to ask like. How do you use your computer?

Because different flavours of linux are adapted to different things.

If you play a lot of video games, - there's a lot more compatibility now than there used to be, but it does matter to keep in mind that not all video games/software automatically work with linux.

Also specialty software programs like photoshop or anything, seems to be the other range of software that usually requires an emulator. So, if you spend a lot of time making art with specialty software, you might need extra set-up for those as well.

Sometimes you have to set up an emulator or something. (Which IMO isn't *difficult*, but it is just another thing you'll have to learn to do.)

(I say this as someone who does not play video games and doesn't use photoshop, so like. I'm not very experienced with that? But there is a lot of documentation for how to set it up, if it's something that you will want/need.)

(I see people using Wine the most, to use software that doesn't naturally play well with linux systems.)

There are other things to keep in mind when picking what flavour of linux you want to try, as well.

Like if you use a netbook and need an operating system that doesn't take much space, or if having touch-screen compatibility is important to you - there are different flavours of linux that are sort of built to be better at different things.

(You absolutely CAN adapt whatever you choose to your preferences?

For example, I've had touchscreen computers with Ubuntu and with Mint, but it's about how much work it takes to get things set up how you like, and if/how often you have to update your settings to maintain your preferences.)
