#and naming things

help me out. so im nearing 20K in my voldemort wins au fic (that YOU made me write) + i have the whole plot outlined but i want at least half of the chapters done before i start posting. soo for the title im torn between reminiscence and anamnesis. they both mean the same thing (remembrance of a memory/past event etc) and i like the first one more, it sounds better to my ear, while anamnesis sounds like a disease buttt its also very long and i can not imagine myself typing reminischeheneene every time i want to refer to the fic so what do i do? :(

Also. Also. Have you reached into my soul or something? Do you have any idea how much I love naming things? Helping with naming things? I become obsessive with it if something doesn't strike immediately. To the point that if I allow my mind to drift to the idea of titles, I can no longer write until I have one. So you, my lovely little peach of a person, have just made my entire day (and the kid's, because she's currently laughing at my bouncing enthusiasm).

So. Okay okay. Excitement for many different reasons. Here we go.

I really like both of those (though i think, like you, i like reminiscence better, only because it does sound sharper and clearer?). But I also understand because if it's something you'll be talking about a lot (which you had better), it'll get annoying very quickly. Learned that from experience. Ugh.

So, how about this instead? Reminiscing is remembering, it's recalling memories. And what are memories? They're an echo of things past. They even fade with time, just like an echo. So so so! What if you called it Echoes? Same general idea, but faster to type, easier to remember, and still strikes that place that rattles a little and makes a person go oh.

Send me something, anything! Do I have to beg, because don't ever think I won't? I have no shame left, remember? It went out the window with dogs.

I Can never come up with titles...

woo titles! it's something that many writers struggle with, so don't worry if you can't think of one immediately!

I always ruminate over it for like... days.. weeks... however long it takes for me to discover the right one. you always want a title that either reflects the entire story, a character within, or a certain section. i know some people write titles that hold no connection to the story they have, which is a practice i'll admit to having.. no understanding of.... at all. i feel like the name of something (whether that be a character, place, or the work itself) is important and shouldn't just be whatever is quickest.

I am a HUGE fan of the format of using either lyrics or "statement (addition/counter)". I lovve using lyrics.... im a huge sucker for those sorts of titles when scrolling through fics. also those one word titles... oohhhh they can be so good too.

for example, basing on my own fics; one of my ongoing longfics is called "domesticated" and it follows the main character as they settle into a new way of life, no longer needing to rely on their violence and ferality to survive. they are 'domesticated' by the others in the home, taught how to live again instead of simply surviving.

another example is; a wip fic that is named "i know it's over, still i" in reference to how a character within that fic is still trying to cling to the idea of someone who has died. the title cuts off before the 'cling' part of the quote because they're both in denial and trying to heal from how they do cling. this character is NOT the main character of the fic, but those who read that story knowing what each of the characters have gone through and what has led to here would share the same perspective as them. clinging to the idea of someone long dead.

in my process of naming my works, the name can come to me at any stage! i never try to force a name to come up, those ones always end up leaving me unsatisfied and i end up changing them.

i have a very long list in my notes of ideas for plots and titles and all that good stuff ^^" i'd be willing to share some if someone wants to hear em

10. How do they feel about becoming a Rogue Trader? How easily do they take to being head of the von Valancius dynasty?

At first he was enthusiastic about the idea of this newfound power and freedom, it was thrilling and overwhelming. He had been so excited right up until he quickly realized how unprepared and underqualified he truly was. Dealing with the lower rabble he was familiar with? Easy. Dealing with the intricacies and politics of nobility while being as crude as he is? Difficult. He loves his new voidship, gets attached to it easily but is massive and full of old secrets. His crew is bigger than anything he has ever had to deal with. He has subjects now? He feels out of place more than he ever has before, he began seeing the situation more of a burden than a boon like he originally thought.

He struggles but he takes it in stride, his saving grace is that he is a quick learner, and can adapt well. And it's not like he is one to back down from a challenge anyway.

14. Who was the most important person in their life prior to becoming a Rogue Trader? Is that person that person still in their life now?

His former boss, hands down. Despite how quickly he went and took her place at the top of the unnamed gang that was on the still unnamed port station he was dumped on after his DH, she was influential to shaping who he is currently for better or for worse. Also he knows she wouldn't have wanted to be mourned anyway.

His old crime lord of a boss, who I do not yet have a name for either, was the only comfort he found when he was made a dock worker after the experience of having his whole world turned upside down, losing his mothership and family when he was just barely an adult. She willingly took him under her wing, not only providing him with a new opportunity and a purpose. She gave him the validation and support he needed at the time. By that I mean she put a gun back in his hands and said he was a good shot. And despite the clear power dynamics at play among other things. It was enough for him to put her on a weirdly high pedestal, a trend he would continue to do to others he becomes fond of in the future.

I will get around to showing more of her eventually, hopefully!

Just some pics I edited/created/improved? The first one is the thumbnail for my most recent video. It’s a Daglout edited pic. The bottom left is what I like to (fondly) call Hiccup Defending Dagur Defending Hiccup (does that count as inception? IDK) and I named it that because Hiccup’s holding Dagur back from attacking someone who just threatened him because he knows Dagur would lose. (I’m mad at myself for saying that too XD). And lastly, on the bottom right is a Dagcup image of Dagur holding Hiccup.

Names are more important than you'd expect. Naming something empowers it. Whether an object or a person, whenever you attach a name to anything it's potential function in the world around you changes accordingly.
